Greetings Black Hawk Middle School families!
August has arrived, and we're feeling those back-to-school vibes!
We look forward to the annual BHMS back-to-school Jamboree on Thursday, August 25, from 12 to 7 p.m. Mark your calendar, and join us in this open house-style gathering where students can pick up a paper copy of their schedule or use their online schedule to practice walking their school day and explore the building.
Students and families can also meet faculty and staff, sign up for educational nutritional benefits, learn about volunteer opportunities, deposit money in lunch accounts, sign up for co-curriculars, purchase a yearbook, and have student photos taken. We are excited to host food trucks throughout the duration of Jamboree and look forward to celebrating the start of the 2022-2023 school year with all of you.
The first day of school is Wednesday, August 31. Our 7th- and 8th-grade students will participate in a normally scheduled school day, while our 6th-graders will participate in the WEB program in the morning and have a modified schedule in the afternoon. The first day of school will be a Green Day and the second day of school on Thursday, September 1, will be a White Day. There will be no school on Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day. School will resume Tuesday, September 6.

Please review the Black Hawk Middle School Student & Family Handbook with your student. This handbook guides our agreements about how we participate in our learning community together. The handbook is a tool to create shared understanding between school and home to strengthen our relationship with expectations and boundaries. This allows for us to focus on student learning and manage the disruptions that happen during the school day with a consistent tool to refer back to when struggles arise. There will be opportunities for students and families to provide feedback on the handbook, and it will be revised annually.
Schoology Support for Parents: This link provides videos to support your understanding of Schoology, our Learning Management System (LMS). Students work in Schoology every day, so we ask parents to create an account or log into their existing account. Schoology is where you can monitor your student’s assignments, work completion, and current grades. Should you need support, contact email@example.com.
Infinite Campus: We refer to our Student Information System (SIS) as “Campus.” Parent accounts are necessary to keep track of important household information, emergency contact information, attendance, and report cards/end of term grades. When you set up your account, you will be required to update emergency contact information. You can request an activation key via the link or contact Nicole Tompkins in our main office (651) 683-8521.
iPad protection plan: Families may opt into the protection plan for $20 per iPad for the entire school year. There is a reduced fee for students eligible for the Educational Benefits Program, so it is recommended that parents and guardians complete that application first. Go to https://www.district196.org and select Services/Food and Nutrition Services.
All families are asked to accept or decline the optional iPad Protection Plan by Monday, September 19, at which time a non-response will be considered declining the offer. To make their choice, parents and guardians log into their MyPaymentsPlus account, do a search for “iPad” and select one of only two options presented: to accept the protection plan or to decline it. Both options include the Student User Agreement for review and acknowledgement. For directions on using MyPaymentsPlus or creating an account, go to https://www.district196.org and select Community/Family Resources. For assistance, families should contact their child’s school.

12-7 p.m. Back-to-School Jamboree
Students and families are invited to come to school for a casual and informative open house-type visit. You’ll be able to pick up a paper student schedule, register for co-curriculars, submit student physicals, apply for nutrition services educational benefit programs, access tech support as a parent, explore the building, purchase Panther spirit wear, meet faculty, staff, administration, and much more!

Green Day - First day of school! WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Day. The primary purpose of WEB is to ease the transition to middle school. Each sixth-grader is paired with an eighth-grade WEB leader who serves in a mentoring-like capacity throughout the year. Seventh- and eighth-graders will participate in designated activities with their grade-level teachers.

Doors open: 7:50 a.m. Students may not be dropped off prior to 7:50 a.m.
Arrival of buses: 8 a.m. (approx.)
Start of school: 8:20 a.m.
End of school : 3:10 p.m.
Students may not stay after school unless supervised by a staff member and in an organized activity. Students must be picked up by 3:30 p.m.
