Black Hawk Families!
Here we are another week closer to the start of the school year. Next week we welcome new teachers and the week after that our full staff is back on campus preparing to kick off the 2020-21 school year, one like no other! Just like so many of you, we are: excited, anxious, curious, and wondering how all of this will come together. I can assure you, we are working hard and continue to focus on health, safety, learning, and support of ALL our students and families. We anticipate our floor markings and signage to support social distancing in and outside of our building will be in place soon. For that we are grateful! Please don’t hesitate to practice wearing masks for lengths of time and heck, even socially distance from your (pre)teen prior to the start of the school year! We’d love to see our students prepped and ready to practice these safety protocols at school.
Back to School Events
We would like to welcome our 6th graders to Black Hawk on Wednesday, September 9th, and new and returning 7th & 8th graders on Thursday, September 10th. This will be a staggered event throughout the afternoon and into the evening. We ask that students come with one parent/guardian and both must wear face coverings. A schedule with the staggered times will be posted on the website in the coming week and included in next week’s letter from the principal.
Our open house will allow students to pick up their schedule, walk the building, meet their teachers, pick up iPads (new students only), and receive technical assistance in accessing Schoology or Campus. Technical support for parents/guardians needing to set up their Schoology or Campus access will also be available.
At this time, we will not be taking Lifetouch photos, selling spirit wear or PE clothing.
8th Grade WEB Leaders
Parents of WEB Leaders:
Schoology messages have been and will continue to be sent to your students regarding WEB 2020-21 (students should check Schoology if they haven't been on for awhile!). We also want to give you, parents and guardians, an update regarding the WEB 2020-21 program.
What will training look like?
We are still planning to host a WEB Leader Training that will be virtual through Zoom on August 28th from 11-12 (no longer in person on August 27th and 28th). Your students will be receiving a Zoom link through a Schoology message next week if they have indicated that they would still like to be a WEB leader. We will teach the WEB leaders activities that allow 6th graders to feel connected to them and their classmates in a virtual setting regardless of if they are enrolled in hybrid classes or the 196 Digital Academy.
What do we need from your students?
We understand that we are embarking on a different WEB experience than what we originally thought. Ensuring safety and social distancing is our top priority. If your students are uncomfortable engaging online with 6th graders and would like to re-think their WEB commitment, please have them indicate that on the google form that we sent to them in Schoology.
Fall sports will start September 21st and end October 23rd. Registration for soccer, cross country and girls tennis will open the week of September 8th. Registration will be done through MyPayment Plus which can be found on the Black Hawk website. Students will participate in athletics on their in-person hybrid cohort day only. Cohort C students are eligible to participate with their assigned cohort based on their last name (A-K Monday and Thursday, L-Z Tuesday and Friday). Activity busses leave BH at 5:00 PM. Registration will include a fee of $50 and a current physical on file with the school nurse.
Principal/Parent Listening Sessions
I would like to offer two opportunities for parents and guardians to participate in a listening session next week. What are your wonderings, concerns, questions? What are you curious about as we enter into this unprecedented school year? I want to hear directly from you! The sessions will be limited to 12 participants each. Please note that I will continue to offer these sessions throughout the school year. If you are unable to attend next week, that’s okay! More sessions will be offered as we move into the school year. Please complete this form Principal/Parent Listening Session Sign Up. The first 12 respondents for each session will be sent a zoom link to participate.
ISD 196 Flexible Learning Plan
The District 196 Flexible Learning Plan was approved for the start of the 2020-21 school year. This allows schools to pivot between the three models: all distance, hybrid, all in person, as dictated by the guidance from the MN Department of Health. As of today, the plan is to begin the 20-21 school in the hybrid model. The information in this document is in draft form. School format plans are fluid and can change depending on Dakota County COVID-19 health data. Full information from the District is within the documents below. We want to communicate a synopsis of this information to you with specifics for Black Hawk:
