News from the Principal - April 13, 2021

Hello Black Hawk Families,

As many of you are aware, the ISD 196 School Board voted last night 6-1 to return all 196 secondary schools to in person learning starting Tuesday, April 20th.  Monday, April 19th, will serve as a transition day and Wednesday, April 21, will remain a scheduled professional development day for teachers; these are both non school days for students.  Our goal is to provide as many in-person and synchronous learning opportunities for students to finish the 2020-21 school year.

BHMS school hours and class times will remain the same through the end of the school year.

We have two learning model options moving forward:
  • In person learning 4 days a week (M, T, Th, F) with Wednesday afternoon support

  • Digital Academy - Zoom 4 days per week

Wednesday remains an online learning day for all students.
All students are required to take attendance in Campus on Wednesday.

As you decide which learning model suits your student and family please note the following:
  • We expect roughly 600 students on site Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

  • We will be shifting from six feet of social distancing to three feet of social distancing in classrooms, hallways, and the lunchroom.

  • In the lunchroom, we will shift from two students per table to four students per table.

  • In order to keep the lunchroom as safe as possible for all students, we anticipate assigning seats in order to create efficiency in contact tracing should it become necessary.

  • The contact tracing protocol will continue to require schools to quarantine students who have had close contact with a COVID-positive student. A close contact is defined as within 6 feet for a cumulative time of 15 minutes or more in a 24 hour period.

So what are my next steps as a parent or guardian?

No action is required if...

  • your student is in full distance learning and wishes to stay in distance learning through the end of the year

  • your student is currently in hybrid and wishes to attend school 4 days a week

Looking to change learning models?

  • For those students who are currently in hybrid but wish to shift to full distance learning through the end of the school year OR students who are in full distance learning and wish to shift into four days a week in person, please contact the Black Hawk main office at (651) 683-8531 or email nicole.tompkins@district196.org

  • All requests to change learning models are needed by 3:00 PM on Friday, April 16th.

Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate another transition in learning models.
Please stay tuned for more information later this week.

COVID - 19 Information

Please take time to review District 196's Student Illness Decision Tree which can be found here. This information is available in English, Spanish and Somali.

As a reminder, we ask that you do not send your child to school if they are sick. If anyone in your household is sick, please keep all siblings home as well until you receive further guidance from school staff. Many symptoms of allergies, common colds, or other respiratory viruses overlap with the symptoms of COVID-19. For the safety of our school community and to promote more in-person learning opportunities, we ask that you assume all symptoms are related to COVID-19 until you receive a negative test result or guidance from a healthcare provider that states otherwise.
