Hello Black Hawk Families,
Together, we successfully navigated our “Fourth First Day of School” this year! This means our team of dedicated educators are implementing the fourth model of teaching and learning in 13 months and our students continue to adapt and demonstrate resilience. The Black Hawk team of educators continues to learn and grow right along with our students. The craft of teaching in-person and on-line at the same time is truly challenging for ALL of us! So, we rise to the occasion!
Per the directive of the Minnesota Department of Education, our students will be taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) Reading Test in their English Language Arts class starting Monday, April 26th. We ask that students approach the test with the intent to do their very best; please support us in this effort as we know this has been a challenging year. We want to ensure our community understands the novelty of this year, the test data it may produce, and we offer grace; we know taking standardized tests can cause stress and anxiety.
At home, please encourage your students to take their time and do their best. A good night's sleep and healthy breakfast can also help kick start the day in a positive way on test days and any day! If you have any questions regarding the MCA Reading test, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for supporting your child and helping them get prepared. We appreciate it!
Below you’ll find specifics on MCA testing in the coming weeks, updates on food service programming, important reminders about COVID, tips on navigating screen time with your teen, resources in the wake of the Chauvin verdict and social unrest, and you’ll also find opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of athletics and activities.
Finally, we are looking for a BHMS parent to serve on the Curriculum and Instruction Advisory Council. You can read more by clicking this link. If interested, please reach out directly to me or submit your application by May 3rd.
MCA testing will be held as follows:
Week of April 26: Reading during English classes (grades 6, 7, 8)
Week of May 3: Math during Math classes (grades 6, 7, 8)
Week of May 10: Science during Science classes (grade 8 only)
Digital Academy Students: April 28-Reading; May 5-Math; May 12-Science (must be in-building)
Information is available on the BHMS Assessments webpage.
With secondary students returning to in-person learning, nutrition services will no longer be serving meals to the greater community. They will refocus on providing meals during the school day to our in-person learners and continue 7- day meal kits for students enrolled in our 196 Digital Academy. Please see this link for more information on the Changes to Meal Sites. Information on the following programs is available on the BHMS Food Services webpage
Free and Reduced Priced Lunch
Emergency Nutritional Benefits for 2021

COVID - 19 Information
Please take time to review District 196's Student Illness Decision Tree which can be found here. This information is available in English, Spanish and Somali.
As a reminder, we ask that you do not send your child to school if they are sick. If anyone in your household is sick, please keep all siblings home as well until you receive further guidance from school staff. Many symptoms of allergies, common colds, or other respiratory viruses overlap with the symptoms of COVID-19. For the safety of our school community and to promote more in-person learning opportunities, we ask that you assume all symptoms are related to COVID-19 until you receive a negative test result or guidance from a healthcare provider that states otherwise.
