News from the Principal - March 30, 2021

Hello Black Hawk Families,

On March 30th, 2020, one year ago today, we as a school community and entire district, launched into emergency distance learning. As we reflect on the last year together and look to the future, our plan is to continue to provide a high quality public education to ALL students by supporting them socially, emotionally, and academically.

The promise of spring, increased access to vaccinations, and the prospect of returning to school, in person (four days a week, prior to the end of the year) provides us with hope. At the same time, the fatigue we are all feeling is real and must be acknowledged. This year has been one of immense change which as we all know can be exhausting at times. The bottom line is, we are ALL working hard to stay: positive, proactive, present, and engaged. We are in this together and believe, “We all do better when we all do better”. So, take care of yourselves, your families, keep supporting each other, showing up and reaching out to us at Black Hawk. We are here to serve not only as educational professionals but as your learning partners!

Good News to Report!

Congratulations to Black Hawk 6th grade Minnesota Studies teacher Brady Beckman who has been named the 2021 Assistant Coach of the Year by the Central MN District of the National Speech and Debate Association.  Mr. Beckman coaches at Eastview High School.  We are proud and honored to work with Mr. Beckman at BHMS and thrilled he can continue to support and serve students at Eastview!

Science Olympiad Team

BHMS is the only middle school in the district that offers a Science Olympiad Team! At our last tournament, Neo Manavalan and Gabriel Rubin took 2nd place in their Machines event, and Jenay Khatri and Ethan Wilske took 3rd place in their Write It CAD event. Our BHMS Midnight team achieved 5th place overall! We have eight 6th graders, eight 7th graders and seven 8th grade students who participate on the team.

Spelling Bee

The results are in and Kartik Saravanapandi took 9th place in the Minnesota State Spelling Bee! After winning the Black Hawk Middle School spelling bee (for the second time in his middle school years) Kartik qualified for the state spelling bee. Kartik, an eighth grader, then had to take the State Spelling Bee test online to help determine the state champion. Kartik’s score on the test made him the highest finisher in District 196. This is also the highest finish for a Black Hawk student since 2012. Way to go Kartik!

"Parenting in a Pandemic" Webinar Series

Parents are being asked to do more than ever to support their children in digital learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. District administrators and educators recognize the difficulties parents are experiencing and are committed to providing families with additional support in these efforts.

Beginning February 10, District 196 Community Education is sponsoring a free webinar series called "Parenting in a Pandemic." The five-part series will be presented by Erin Walsh of Spark & Stitch Institute. The organization is committed to sparking greater understanding of why kids need courage and connection to thrive and how to foster it in the digital age.

"Parenting in a Pandemic" consists of the following five webinars, all of which will begin at 6 p.m.:

  • March 31 – Staying Engaged in Learning and Work: The Science of Motivation
