News from the Principal - March 8, 2021

Here we go!  We are walking into, Zooming into, and navigating this last week of Tri 2 together!  These first few weeks of Hybrid 2.0 with students on campus, in the Zoom room, and learning together at the same time has been welcoming and humbling for us all.  We are so happy to have students back on campus and have embraced the somewhat daunting task of teaching in a manner we never have before. Thank you again to parents and caregivers for your patience, flexibility and support as we continue to embrace the challenges of this school year.  Most importantly, thank you to our students, most of whom do their best work when they’re on campus with their teachers and their peers: thinking, learning, growing, and inquiring about the world around them.

As we move into the final third of the year, I am thinking about a collective “Attitude of Gratitude” in the Black Hawk Community.  This starts with our Annual Food Drive, where we are working together as a community to raise $2021 dollars and 2021 pounds of food for the Open Door Pantry in Eagan, a food shelf that serves our school community and beyond. See details below on our final three days of collection this week!  We are grateful for this larger event to bring our community together, but also for the small everyday things that keep us going, namely, each other: the words of encouragement, a listening ear, a “smize” (smile with your eyes), a coffee, a note of encouragement.  An “Attitude of Gratitude” causes pause to stop and think about the strengths in our community; there are so many.  In a society where we sometimes focus first on what’s wrong, I encourage us to focus on what’s right and what our students need in order to be successful.

In order to support the growth and development of ALL students, we need to notice and celebrate their strengths.  The Search Institute is a research based non-profit in Minnesota that has been doing research on youth and what they need to succeed since 1957.  The Search Institute has identified, “40 Positive Supports and Strengths that Young People Need to Succeed.”  Take a moment and check them out!  The Search Institute is a professional organization I have been tapping into for all of my years as an educator, grounding me and reminding me of what ALL of our kids deserve and need to succeed.
