News from the Principal - November 30, 2020

Here we are, November 30th, the last Monday of trimester 1 is upon us and December is... tomorrow?  Where does the time go?  As we close the first trimester and look towards the final month of 2020, I am drawn to a guiding principle used by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commision, the principal of Ubuntu which translates, “My humanity is inextricably bound up in yours.”  Sometimes Ubuntu is translated, “I am because you are.”  Simply put, we as educators are here, because of you, our students and families.  We are bound together in our community.  We are facing challenges like we’ve never seen before and need to remember we are in constant relationship with each other.  We are here to support and connect with one another when things are going well and when things are difficult.  As we educate in full distance learning we want you to know we are here working hard to find ways to ensure that we are engaging our students and creating safe classroom environments.  We want our students to have the opportunity to be seen, be heard, and be able to ask for help when they need it.

Last Wednesday through us a curveball in our efforts to connect!  I hope you all received the School Messenger email and/or voicemail as the struggle with Schoology for both teachers and students was real!  Please note you can now “opt” in to receive messages via text message.  Just text “opt in” to 67587. Standard message and data rates may apply. Participating carriers include : AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Alltel, Boost, U.S. Cellular, MetroPCS and other carriers. For help information, text HELP to 67587, To opt out at any time, text STOP to 67587.

In the coming week your student(s) should be working with teachers to close the trimester strong.  Students who are close to passing classes should reach out to teachers for support and clarify what needs to be done to cross the finish line with a “P”, the former “D”.  Most of us “live” day to day in Schoology, this is where “In Progress” grades live.  Students with an overall percentage below 70% as a grade for any class will see an “IP” (in progress) grade in Schoology during the trimester. These “IP” grades in Schoology are temporary, and will eventually change for final report cards documented in Infinite Campus.  Please note the ISD 196 Middle School grading scale below.

Student Experience Circles

During the month of December Principal Kusch will hold student experience circles by grade level to learn about what school was like trimester 1 from the student perspective.  What is working?  What’s not?  What are students wondering and worrying about?  What ideas do students have to make their 2020-2021 learning experience better?  Please encourage your student to sign up with the link below or in the Schoology message from Principal Kusch.
