Hello Black Hawk Community,
Here we are in week 6! We have officially reached our mid-tri mark with conferences around the corner, starting next week. Thank you to those parents/guardians who participated in the Principal/Parent Listening Sessions last week. I look forward to meeting more of you as more sessions will be offered as the year progresses. Your insights, questions, and suggestions are ALWAYS welcome and do not hesitate to reach out with your wonderings and feedback! We appreciate and value your partnership.
Health and Safety Update
Continue to take the time to be vigilant with your student’s and your family’s health and safety. Thank you for reviewing the Home Wellness Self-Screening DAILY prior to sending your student to school. Should you wonder what to do if your student or someone else in the home is showing symptoms please refer to the District 196 Student Illness Decision Tree and call the Black Hawk school nurse, Molly McQuown, at 651-905-5817 with questions. Our goal is to keep our students healthy and safe while providing an equitable educational experience where each student is learning, growing, and achieving during this uncertain time. We need your ongoing support and engagement to keep our learning community healthy, safe, and thriving. Please do not hesitate to call with questions.

In order to personalize conferences and be able to listen and learn about your student’s successes and needs, we have distributed the conferencing case-load amongst our staff. As a result, your student MAY NOT conference with their Panther Time teacher. They should however, be conferencing with a teacher they currently have. Please watch for an email from the teacher your student will conference with this week. The email will include directions on how to sign up for a conference time slot. Please leave comments to share if you prefer a phone conference, Zoom conference, and/or if you have other accommodations (e.g. an interpreter, or need to meet in person on campus). We appreciate your patience as we create a conferencing model for our current circumstances.
Taking Attendance When Learning from Home
As we near the middle of the trimester and conferences we want to make sure everyone continues to understand the workflow of their day. The first thing a student does when learning from home is take attendance using the Infinite Campus App on their iPad. Students need to take their attendance when they are learning from home, this would be 5 days a week for our Digital Academy, cohort C students, and 3 days a week for our Hybrid cohort A & B students. Below are directions and a video for taking attendance.
After students take attendance using the Infinite Campus App, they should open the Schoology App on their iPad. Schoology is where students go to engage in their learning. This is where teachers communicate with students and parents. This includes assignments, keeping a calendar, resources, and messages. To see how your child’s teachers' Schoology pages are arranged please view the Schoology Introduction Videos for parents (linked below). In addition to what teachers walk through with students, there are also videos created for just students. It’s helpful for parents to know and understand the student view and the parent view (if you choose).
In addition, one of the parent videos focuses on the Parent Email Digest; this is how parents can receive daily or weekly snapshots of their student’s progress as well as choosing to receive Overdue Submissions notifications.
Registration for Winter Sports I, girls basketball and boys wrestling, opens Thursday October 22. The registration fee is $50.

Free and Reduced Priced Lunch
Your child may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.
District 196 provides healthy meals each day for all students. And your family may qualify for free or reduced-priced school meals. If you participated in this program last school year and wish to participate again this year, you must submit a new application each year.
Federal funds and school-related fees are determined with this information. The failure to complete the application could result in the loss of millions of dollars to our school system, which would negatively affect teaching and learning in a significant way.
All students in our district are currently eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch through the extension of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s free meals program, however this funding is not guaranteed long-term. It is important families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals still apply this year.
To apply, visit https://paypams.com/Applynowisd196 or call 651-683-6958 if you need assistance filling out the application.

Library Services for Cohort C (Digital Academy) Students
We want Cohort C students to feel connected to BHMS and make sure they have all the resources they need. Starting this week, cohort C students will have curbside pickup and in person library checkout options, so they can get printed books, too.
Learn how to request books and schedule a curbside pickup, offered on Wednesdays: https://bit.ly/3dlw2la
If you feel comfortable coming into the library on Wednesdays to browse shelves and choose books in person, learn more: https://bit.ly/3iYjAcE
Evening hours will be available approximately every other Wednesday for both checkout options.
DaKota County Library still has curbside pickup available even though their doors are open to patrons.
MackinVIA is an additional option for all BHMS students. Go to Self-service and install the latest app. To sign in, select “BLACK HAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL, EAGAN, MN.” Use your studentID and Collab password to login. Type the title you want in the search box and follow the prompts. There are other ways to search for resources, too. Here’s a link to a video from Mackin. https://player.vimeo.com/video/85825759
If you have questions, please email Ms. Ninteman, the library media specialist, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Happy reading!
