Minnesota Scholastic Chess Championships

Three students from Black Hawk Middle School travelled to the Minnesota Scholastic Chess Championships last weekend and took 3rd place in state! What is so amazing about their third-place finish is that they were competing with only three people against teams of four. With one of their teammates gone on vacation, the others stepped up in a big way. Isaac T., an eighth grader, alo earned third overall as an individual. Kartik S., a seventh grader took 13th overall and Huy V., eighth grader, earned 16th. Way to represent Black Hawk Middle School guys!

Thank You From BHMS Booster Club

Thanks to everyone who came out for our Cafe Zupas night on March 3, our school will be receiving a check for $102!  Way to go Black Hawk families!

Library Media News

Yikes!  465 Library Books are Overdue:  At an average price of $15.00, that’s $6,975.00 worth of books!  Overdue notices are emailed to students every Friday morning. Encourage your student to check his or her email and return books or bring them in to the library to renew.  Students who get their library records into good standing by Friday, March 20, can get three tickets for the chance to win posters and books. Winners will be announced after spring break.  Thank you for helping to keep our collection strong and returning books so others can enjoy them, too.

Earn Tickets to Meet the Author An Na:  Did you know that only 7% of children’s books published in 2018 contained characters that were Asian/Pacific American or Asian Pacific Islander?  Mirrors- stories that reflect ourselves and our own culture, and windows- stories that let us learn about other people and their experiences, are necessary for helping people to form positive self-concepts.  Thanks to the generosity of Dakota County Library, BHMS has the privilege of hearing award-winning Korean American author An Na speak to us on the morning of Thursday, April 2.  The focus of her presentation will be on immigration and identity, which are often themes in her books. Students in grades 6 – 8 can earn tickets in two ways. They can read her book A Step from Heaven and participate in the book discussion.  The other way they can earn a ticket is to complete the application by writing a paragraph about why they wish to attend the presentation.  Copies of the book and applications are available in the library. For more information about windows and mirrors, read these articles:  https://www.slj.com/?detailStory=an-updated-look-at-diversity-in-childrens-books  https://www.weareteachers.com/mirrors-and-windows/

ACT Testing Revision

District 196 high schools have revised schedules for ACT testing April 7

District 196 students in grades 9 and 12 will have a flexible learning day at home on Tuesday, April 7, due to ACT testing for students in grades 10 and 11 that will take place at Apple Valley, Eagan, Eastview and Rosemount high schools, Area Learning Center and Dakota Ridge that day.

On April 7, all students in grade 11 will be offered the opportunity to take the ACT test during the school day, in accordance with state law. Students in grade 10 will also be expected to be at school April 7 to take the PreACT test. Both tests will be offered at no cost to students. The ACT is the primary admissions test for students attending colleges in the Midwest. The PreACT is a college-readiness test that measures achievement in English, math, reading and science, as well as students’ career interests and whether they are on track to pursue their goals after high school.

There is no make-up ACT test day this year. If school were to be canceled April 7 due to weather, the district’s ACT testing date would be moved online to April 21, but that is not a date for make-ups.

LIKE Screening

Explore the impact of social media on our lives. See LIKE, an IndieFlix original documentary. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together. The goal of this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other.  This event is offered in cooperation with the Dakota County Safe and Drug Free School Coordinators and the Dakota County Healthy Communities Collaborative. The Resource Fair will be open before and after the presentation. The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m.
